Cub Scenes Aerial Photography is based at the Abrams Municipal airport in Grand Ledge, Michigan, and flies photo missions year around. In order to perform aerial photography successfully
we need to be able to have a clear view of our subject. This aircraft is great for the task because the "door" is not really a door, but rather a panel which is split into two parts, the bottom half of which is solid fabric while the top half is a
Plexiglass panel which can be raised in flight giving the photographer has a wide field of vision and a great photography platform. Our traditional yellow Piper Cub, a 1939 Piper J-3 Cub, trained pilots for WWII.
On the left is a picture of the Cub Scenes crew preparing to launch for another "photo op" in the sky. The aircraft is a 1939 Piper J-3 Cub with an 85hp Continental engine which has an electric starter to save Betty from having to hand prop the aircraft. You see, this aircraft belongs to Betty. It was a birthday gift to her several years back.
Betty and I met when I taught her how to fly many years ago. Since then we have had the pleasure of boring holes in the sky together and enjoy this and our other hobby, sailing, together.
